1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述包含参考文献)
1.Introduction1.1Research backgroundWith the acceleration of economic globalization, cultural globalization has been a trend, and cross-cultural exchanges have become increasingly important. Because of the combination of sound and image, the content communicated by the film and television works can be more easily understood by the audience. Film and television works can not only meet people's entertainment needs and enrich their spiritual life, but also play a crucial role in promoting cultural exchanges. Therefore, the subtitle translation of film and television works is particularly significant, the quality of which influences cross-cultural communication of the world. The American sitcom Friends which shows friendship, love, career and family appeals to numerous Americans, and almost all the audience across the world can be touched by it with no great difficulty in understanding and accepting the content. The sitcom has been hot for decades and undoubtedly is of great help to the spread of American culture. As a result, some scholars study the subtitle translation of Friends from the perspectives of functional equivalence, relevance theory or cultural differences and analyze the translation skills of rhetorical devices in the subtitles. In 2009, Zhang Delu proposes a comprehensive framework for multimodal discourse analysis and explores a new path for subtitle translation research. This paper analyzes the subtitle translation of Friends from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis, and discusses the role of multimodal discourse analysis theory in subtitle translation.1.2 Research purposesBased on the comprehensive theoretical framework of Professor Zhang Delu, this paper intends to study the subtitle translation of Friends from cultural level, context level, content level and expression level, and analyze the characteristics of the subtitle translation and the reasons why it can be widely accepted by audiences.2.Literature reviewWith the rapid development of multimedia technology, multimodal discourse analysis has gradually become one of the linguistic research hotspots. It integrates the modalities of other fields such as images, sounds, colors, and so on to jointly present the complete meaning of the work.Since the interaction between image and language in expressive meaning was found, some scholars have begun to conduct more in-depth research on multimodal discourse analysis. Based on the theory of systematic functional linguistics, Zhang Delu (2009) establishes a comprehensive framework for multimodal discourse analysis, which can be carried out fromfour levels: cultural, context, content and expression levels. At the same time, it is found that the relationship between different modalities can be divided into two categories: complementary and non-complementary. Finally, Zhang discusses the establishment of grammatical structure of non-linguistic modality, the relationship between grammatical structure and textual structure, and how grammatical structure shows conceptual meaning, interpersonal meaning and textual meaning.Zhang Delu and Guo Enhua (2009) finds that there are two main perspectives of multimodal discourse analysis in linguistics: social semiotics based on systemic functional linguistics and conceptual metaphor based on cognitive linguistics. These two perspectives can be interconnected in theoretical paradigms and can complement each other in multimodal discourse analysis. The combination of the two can strongly promote the development of multimodal discourse analysis theory. According to the theoretical framework for multimodal discourse analysis and research with the theory of systemic functional linguistics, Zhang Delu (2009) provides guidance for the choice of effective procedures and practice in foreign language teaching under the condition of modern media technology. He claims that the choice of modes and media in a multimodal discourse communication in a foreign language teaching setting can be made from the following three perspectives. Firstly, it should be able to provide new teaching environments and facile conditions. Secondly, it should be able to provide supplementary or enabling conditions. Thirdly, it should be able to provide multi-channels for meaning making in a multimodal discourse communication.Since then, domestic scholars have mainly used the comprehensive framework of multimodal discourse proposed by Zhang Delu to study the subtitle translation of various film and television works.Lyu Jian and Wu Wenzhi (2012) proposes that under the theoretical guidance of the comprehensive framework of multimodal discourse, the subtitle translation of The Flowers of War is discussed from the cultural level, context level, content level and expression level. It is found that the subtitle translators of the film combine language with images, sounds and other symbols, and convey the humanistic care promoted by the film to the audience in different language backgrounds through subtitle translation. He Lingli (2014) notes that it can be found that in the process of subtitle translation, single modality sometimes can not fully express the message, and the meaning should be expressed through the combination of several modalities, such as language, image, sound, movement, tone, etc. Moreover, visual images and dialogues are synchronized together to construct the meaning. In addition, she finds that the theory of Multimodality Discourse Analysis is of great importance to subtitle translation in view of taking the social-cultural condition of the target culture into account.Zhao Yushan and Ren Xiaojing (2018) finds that when subtitles play a key role in constructing meaning, subtitles should be fully translated to use strategies such as literal translation or addition. When subtitles play a secondary role in the meaning construction process, the subtitle translation should be clearly described in short, and strategies such as omission should be adopted. Besides, the cultural phenomenon should be paid attention to in the subtitle translation. Some scholars conduct multimodal discourse analysis on some elements other than subtitle translation of films, TV dramas, documentaries, advertisements and other works.Yang Xinlu (2013) works on the multimodal discourse analysis of the film The Shawshank Redemption based on the theory of Visual Grammar and Sound Montage. She notes that the images in the film can achieve its representational meaning through the use of vector to present narrative process and show symbolic meaning through conception process; interactional meaning of the image can be realized through detailed different choices of social distances, perspectives, modality markers etc.; compositional meaning of the image is shown through different choices of positions of the represented participants, sizes etc. From the perspective of multimodal discourse theory, Zhou Shan (2014) takes Russian public service advertisement discourse as the object and proposes that there are four relations between verbal mode and visual mode in meaning expression.Yan Huixian (2015) makes a multimodal analysis of the characteristics of Chinese traditional culture and its discourse construction strategies for the documentary A Bite of China. She finds that we can use multimodal analysis of videos to explain cross-cultural knowledge and foster students' cross-cultural ability. After making a multimodal analysis of the BBC documentary Chinese New Year: the Biggest Celebration on Earth, Liang Qiuming (2018) writes that from the perspective of visual mode, the meanings of each episode are constructed in three ways: representational, interactive and compositional. Kim So Yoon (2020) examines the disability support offices (DSOs) websites of twelve US higher education institution (HEIs) anchored in multimodal discourse analysis and genre analysis to examine how semiotic resources are deployed to describe DSO services on their websites and to determine the discursive functions of advertisement they perform.ReferencesKim So Yoon.(2020).
